Michael S. Lawrence is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP. He has represented clients involved in civil lawsuits in state and federal courts, as well as investigations by state and federal regulatory agencies, relating to alleged mortgage and lending discrimination, violation of consumer fraud and unfair competition statutes and violation of state and federal securities laws. He has also represented clients in cases involving claims for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, and other torts. Mr. Lawrence has experience representing clients in the technology sector litigating claims for trade secret misappropriation, copyright infringement, violations of the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and federal communications laws.
Mr. Lawrence has also defended clients against class action lawsuits filed in state and federal court and has successfully challenged class certification at all stages of litigation. He has represented clients in various alternative dispute resolution forums, including arbitrations and mediations. Mr. Lawrence is a member of the firm's Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution and Consumer Financial Services Litigation Practices.
Mr. Lawrence has worked on appeals and writ petitions filed in a number of state and federal appellate courts, including the United States Courts of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Second Circuit, First Circuit and the California Court of Appeal. He has also successfully represented clients in disputes involving requests for injunctive or declaratory relief.
Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Lawrence was a litigation associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He was also a litigation and summer associate at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP.
Mr. Lawrence received his law degree, cum laude, from Rutgers University School of Law (2005) where he was a recipient of a Dean's Merit Scholarship and the Eagleton Institute of Politics Raimondo Legislative Fellowship. Mr. Lawrence interned at the New Jersey Assembly Republican office and co-chaired the Rutgers Law School Republicans. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science, cum laude, from the Boston University, College of Arts & Sciences (2001).
Mr. Lawrence is admitted to practice in California, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, as well as a number of California federal district courts.
