About this office:

With approximately 80 attorneys, Modrall Sperling is the largest law firm in New Mexico, unmatched for the depth and breadth of its legal services and capabilities. Founded in 1937, it is the second oldest law firm in the state and its members have distinguished, deep and far-reaching roots throughout New Mexico and the West.

With offices conveniently accessible in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, Modrall Sperling boasts comprehensive services in all major areas of legal practice and is fully prepared to meet both the basic and sophisticated demands of business and individual clients in a challenging economy, including complex litigation. From its homegrown roots, the firm has developed significant local and national expertise in natural resources, energy and Indian law. The firm routinely advises clients throughout the country on all aspects of renewable and conventional energy including wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, oil and gas, and mining. Firm members routinely address issues related to public lands, environmental law, water rights and quality, NEPA, cultural and historic resources, endangered species including both federal, state, and tribal regulatory issues. The firm has particular expertise in advising those conducting business within Indian Country including real estate permitting and leasing, labor and employment, and conventional and renewable resource development.

Many of the firm's attorneys come to the profession with prior careers already established in their areas of expertise, and, and more than half of the firm's attorneys are litigators. Utilizing a cross-team approach, it is the diverse expertise of the firm's practitioners that provides a basis to effectively address even the most complex multifaceted legal issue. The firm's legal teams work collaboratively to ensure clients receive the best possible legal attention in a manner that is effective and cost efficient. An especially high level of importance is placed on client service throughout the firm, and related training is emphasized for all attorneys. The firm's philosophy is demonstrated through a unique combination of superior legal services, a high-level of responsiveness, and one-on-one regular client visits.

Modrall Sperling lawyers are continuously recognized for excellence in their areas of practice in prestigious independent listings including Chambers USA, Super Lawyers, Lawdragon and Best Lawyers in America in which the firm lists 34 attorneys, more than any other New Mexico-based law firm. In just recent months, six of the firm's attorneys were chosen "Best of the Bar" in a joint effort by the State Bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico Business Weekly (May 2009), listing more Modrall Sperling attorneys than from any other law firm in the state. In November 2008, a firm shareholder was named Business Lawyer of the Year by the New Mexico State Bar Business Law Section, and in March 2009 was named the "New Mexico Best Lawyers Banking Lawyer of the Year," by Best Lawyers in America. Best Lawyers also has recognized another shareholder and chair of the firm's Creditors' Right Group in the Litigation Department, who was honored for distinguished accomplishments in the areas of Bankruptcy and Creditor/Debtor Rights as well as in Business.

In addition to serving within the profession, many Modrall Sperling practitioners have held and continue to hold noteworthy key positions in the community and the legal profession. From its talented ranks the firm has produced local and national bar association leaders, judges and prosecutors; members of judicially-appointed committees; policymakers, authors of legal treatises, and professors of the law. Within the firm's current ranks are a former president of the American Bar Association, former members of the University of New Mexico Board of Regents, two former U.S. Attorneys for the State of New Mexico, and the in-coming president of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Association.
