Biography

Training at Royal Institute of Public Administration, U.K; The International Development Law Institute, Rome; International Law Institute, Washington, D.C. and others on, among other subjects, advance training on legislative drafting, privatization of public enterprises, public enterprise reform, petroleum agreements, loan negotiations and human rights issues.

Ms. Bensouda founded the firm in 1995. Prior to private practice she worked for the Government of The Gambia for Fourteen years and was Solicitor General of The Gambia for 5 years (1990-1995) and also acted as Minister of Justice and Attorney General. She was respectively Legal Draftsperson; Chief Parliamentary Counsel and Counsel for the privatization of State owned Enterprises & Reform of Parastatals.

Ms. Bensouda's professional areas of expertise include Corporate & Commercial Law, Banking and Finance, Property, Public Policy and Regulation, Intellectual Property, Human Rights, and Dispute Resolution. She advises Gambian and international financial and corporate institutions including Government Agencies and parastatals on regulatory matters, international transactions and financial arrangements.

Ms. Bensouda is a Member of the London Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (CIArB) and a trained Mediator. She has been involved in numerous high profile litigation matters and has acted as an arbitrator and mediator in commercial disputes.

She is the Board Chairperson of Takaful Insurance Company Limited, Reliance Financial Services Company Limited, a micro finance company, Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) and a Director of Action Aid International in The Gambia. She was also the President of the Gambia Bar Association for two consecutive terms of the Gambian Bar Association.

She has written an article on Arbitration in The Gambia published by LCIA World Wide Arbitration Services; Article on Law and Media Establishments published by The Media Foundation for West Africa in Ghana; Gambia monthly law reports.

Member of the London Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (CIArB) and a trained Mediator.

Transactions As counsel for the government divestiture and public enterprise reform program Ms. Bensouda restructured several corporations and parastatals for privatization including: The Gambia Groundnut Corporation restructured into a private limited liability company G.G.C with majority of the shares sold to an international company; The Gambia Utilities Corporation; Acquisition of Cable and Wireless; Restructuring of the Gambia Telecommunications Services; Sale of government holdings including Sunwing now Sun Beach Hotel, Atlantic Hotel, the Ferry Services, Nyambai Sawmills; Set up joint ventures between Government and private investors both local and international; As law officer then Solicitor General Ms. Bensouda has also negotiated loans with international institutions like International Finance Corporation (World Bank); Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), African development Bank, and Islamic Development Bank. She has also negotiated debt relief on behalf of The Gambian Government with the Paris Club.
