Patricia "Patty" McMurray joined Adams and Reese in 1987 and leads the Real Estate team in Baton Rouge. Patty focuses her practice on all types of commercial transactions, forestry, real estate and education law. She is also an experienced litigator in the bankruptcy, creditors' rights and general commercial areas.
Patty has worked with several schools on education issues and has been instrumental in the developing area of charter school law. Her other significant contributions include:
· Assisting in the sale of 6.8 million acres of timber holdings, much of it concentrated in the South and Great Lakes regions, by International Paper Co., described as the largest land transaction since the Louisiana Purchase by the United States.
· Assisting in drafting Louisiana's statewide purchase agreement form for residential real property. This form is required by law to be used by real estate agents. Patty has also written handbooks on purchase agreements and has given many seminars on the topic.
· Assisting with the opening of charter schools in Louisiana as additional avenues to improve public education for the state.
· Serving as a speaker for the Louisiana State University Law School, the National Business Institute, the Louisiana Real Estate Commission and the Louisiana State Bar Association. Patty also annually writes the chapter on Louisiana in the West publication Bankruptcy Exemption Manual.
Patty has been selected as one of the nine most influential women in the Baton Rouge business community and was named among the top 25 women attorneys in the state by Louisiana Super Lawyers®. She is also listed in Chambers USA - Real Estate, and Best Lawyers® - Banking, Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law, and Real Estate Law. Patty graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science. She earned her J.D. at Louisiana State University where she was a member of the moot court.
Patty is a recipient of the Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteerism from the Louisiana State Bar Association. Patty has made a lasting impact on her community through her work with the Pro Bono Project in Baton Rouge and with the Children's Charter School, an elementary school serving an at-risk population where 97 percent of the students are at or below the federal poverty level. Through her efforts, she helped establish a school library with books donated by members of Adams and Reese, other Baton Rouge law firms, and her personal clients. She also donates time to the Louisiana Symphony Association and is a former board member of Boys Hope Girls Hope.
In her free time, Patty enjoys painting.
