For more than 30 years, Paul Strain has concentrated on litigation involving complex issues of technology and science. He has successfully argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, Federal Circuits, and state high courts, and has appeared as lead jury-trial counsel on behalf of significant American corporations in federal or state courts in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. He has been the chief litigator for the State of Maryland, the Head of Venable's litigation practice, and the chief litigator for clients in intellectual property, product liability, and complex commercial litigation, including commercial fraud. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Strain has been recognized as a leader in his field by publications such as Chambers USA. He serves as a national or regional counsel for several clients and has vast experience representing pharmaceutical companies and other manufacturers in product liability, surety, bad faith, intellectual property and other litigation involving issues of science and technology. Significant Matters Recent examples of Mr. Strain's cases include successful representation of clients in the Supreme Court (reversing the Circuit Court opinion against Venable's client), Federal Circuit (affirming the trial jury's judgment for Venable's client), 4th Circuit (affirming summary judgment in favor of Venable's client), 1st Circuit (reversing trial verdict against Venable's client), 2nd Circuit (affirming summary judgment for Venable's client) as well as defense verdicts for Venable's clients in many different jurisdictions, a plaintiff's verdict for Venable's industrial client in the Eastern District of Ohio, obtaining a verdict valued in excess of $13 million and a verdict in favor of Venable's client for willful infringement in the Northern District of Illinois. Activities Active in professional associations, Mr. Strain belongs to the Maryland State Bar Association, District of Columbia Bar Association, and the Section of Litigation, Intellectual Property and Tort and Insurance Practice Sections of the American Bar Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
