Biography

Peter focuses his practice on patent prosecution, patent portfolio management and development, freedom to operate, infringement and validity opinions, licensing and related transactions, and client counseling, primarily in the biotechnology and chemistry fields. Peter also has experience in opposition proceedings, interferences, and litigation.

Notable Experience

· Peter has obtained key patents for clients in a variety of technologies, including screening assays, genomics, proteomics, catalytic antibodies, bacteriology, recombinant organisms and vaccines, immunology, small molecule pharmaceuticals, chemical processes, analytical processes, alternate energy sources, high throughput PVD/CVD apparatus and coating processes, fluid purification systems and separations technology.

· He has advised a variety of clients including academic institutions, research and teaching hospitals, Fortune 500 companies, and emerging and developing biotechnology, high technology, and small molecule pharmaceutical companies.

· Peter has prosecuted and managed substantial intellectual property portfolios on behalf of companies and institutions throughout the United States and Europe.

· He has successfully concluded licensing and research collaboration agreements in genomics, screening assay and scientific visualization technologies.

· Peter designed and implemented an intellectual property policy for the Rhode Island Center for Thin Film and Interface Research, a collaboration among the National Science Foundation, the State of Rhode Island, Brown University and the University of Rhode Island.

· He helped design and was on the advisory board of the Rhode Island Center for Applied Neuroscience, headed by Brown University Nobel laureate Leon Cooper.

Before Edwards Wildman

Upon graduating from Brown University, Peter was a clinical microbiologist at the Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, after which he was a synthetic organic chemist in the herbicide discovery group of the Agricultural Division of American Cyanamid Co. (later acquired by American Home Products and subsequently Wyeth). While at Cyanamid, Peter did extensive synthesis work relating to a novel family of imidazolinone herbicides (subsequently patented and sold under the trademark Pursuit). Upon graduating from law school, Peter began the practice of intellectual property law at a firm in New York City. Peter then returned to his alma mater, where he was Senior Development Officer for Science & Engineering, and Associate Director, Corporate & Foundation Relations. During his tenure at Brown, Peter spent a number of years as a solo practitioner, providing legal consultation on intellectual property matters in the biotechnology and chemical fields to the chairman of the intellectual property practice group at a New York-based law firm. Prior to joining the Firm in the summer of 2003, Peter was a partner at a major Boston intellectual property law firm where he focused in chemistry and biotechnology patent prosecution and related areas of practice.

Peter studied voice at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and has sung with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Rhode Island, the Princeton Pro Musica, the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and the Chorus Pro Musica in Boston.

Peter has been active in civic affairs as a member of the Providence School Department Desegregation Task Force, a math and science tutor through Volunteers in Providence Public Schools, and President of the Elmhurst Neighborhood Association. Peter currently serves on the board of directors of AIDS Care Ocean State.
