Biography

Healthcare executives and medical staff depend on Pete for his valued advice in health law, information management, privacy and security matters. He frequently counsels clients on contracting, research compliance, fraud and abuse, managed-care, medical staffing, Medicare/Medicaid, patient care, operational and transactional issues. He is full immersed in the regulatory complexities surrounding the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH).

A member of the Healthcare, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals team, Pete has:

•Advised a 10-hospital health system on general corporate and governance matters; financing, mergers and acquisitions; labor and employment; employee benefits; environmental issues; and litigation.

Counseled in health information data breaches involving thousands of patients' medical records.

Represented clients in Medicaid compliance and reimbursement disputes before state regulatory agencies.

Before joining Husch Blackwell, Pete was an assistant general counsel for the Missouri Department of Mental Health and was assistant professor of psychiatry and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

•Advised clients in Medicaid compliance and reimbursement disputes before state regulatory agencies. Also defended responsible third parties against Medicare secondary payer and Medicaid subrogation claims.

•Drafted medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations. Also represented hospitals in medical staff disciplinary proceedings.

•Represented health system with acquisition and integration of large cardiology practice.

•Set up pharmacies in all 50 states and territories for specialty pharmacy provider.
