Bar Profile:
Founded in 1877, the Illinois State Bar Association is the premier legal association in the state of Illinois. As a voluntary organization, the Association's primary focus is to help Illinois lawyers practice more effectively and efficiently by providing time and money-saving services. The ISBA is also engaged in many important activities on behalf of the profession — among them proposing and shaping legislation, educating the public about the law and the justice system, and supporting the courts and the rule of law.

The Illinois State Bar Association has a membership of approximately 33,000 including lawyers and law student members, including an annual operating budget of $8.4 million, and a staff of 52. The Association is governed by an elected Assembly of 201 members and an elected 25 member Board of Governors.

There are 39 sections and divisions that ISBA members can join that focus on a substantive area of law or the business of law. These entities each produce newsletters and CLE events. There are also 36 standing committees and 6 special committees consisting of 5 to 50 members each; membership in these groups is by appointment by the President.

The monthly Illinois Bar Journal is the award-winning flagship publication of the Association. Additional publications include E-Clips (daily e-bulletin of Illinois and 7th Circuit case digests), Illinois Lawyer Now (online blog, Weekly bulletin, and Quarterly print publications), and section newsletters. The ISBA also provides its members with free online legal research through Fastcase.

The Association's LawEd department sponsors approximately 120 continuing legal education live on-site seminars a year, in addition to numerous new and archived webinars, webcasts and electronic programs through FastCLE. Educational programs cover such areas as real estate, family law, criminal law, worker's compensation, personal injury, civil practice. Various educational programs are also held during the Annual and Midyear meetings. The ISBA section newsletters report the latest developments through opinion summaries, analysis of legislation, reports on new statutes and court opinions, and commentary about what's new in the law.

Registration to practice law in Illinois is under the auspices of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, an arm of the Illinois Supreme Court. Total lawyer registration is over 83,000 lawyers.

Annual Meetings:
The ISBA holds three annual conventions a year in addition to a twice-yearly CLE Fest. The ISBA Annual Meeting is held in June, generally at a resort-type location. This meeting marks the beginning of the association year, with the incoming officers taking office at this time. The ISBA Midyear Meeting is held at a downtown Chicago hotel, often in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Illinois Judges Association. The ISBA Solo & Small Firm Conference is held in the fall, generally in the Chicago suburbs or downstate, and is the premiere networking and CLE event for solo and small firm lawyers in Illinois.
