Bar Profile:
The Massachusetts Bar Association was founded in 1910 as a means to unify, and make more effective, efforts of Massachusetts' many smaller bar associations to improve the quality of justice. From its very early years, the MBA encouraged a great diversity in its membership. Women, African-Americans, Jews, Irish and others denied membership in other bars were welcomed into the ranks of the MBA. The association also launched the first legal education programs, helped create the first legal aid services for Massachusetts poor, initiated the Client Security Fund to repay the client victims of thieving lawyers and, most recently, championed the cause of court management reform leading to the 1993 reorganization of Massachusetts trial court management structure and practice.

The MBA sponsors hundreds of CLE programs throughout Massachusetts and publishes numerous books on law practice. The association also publishes Lawyers Journal, the largest circulation lawyers' newspaper in Massachusetts; the weekly electronic newsletter Lawyers e-Journal; and two respected quarterly publications, Section Review and Massachusetts Law Review.

The MBA is the primary organization representing the legal profession before the state Legislature. Areas of particular interest to the MBA include auto insurance reform, capital punishment, unauthorized practice of law, lawyer advertising, access to justice, and law-related education in public schools.

The Massachusetts Bar Association is a voluntary association. Of the state's 43,000 practicing lawyers, 18,500 are members of the association. The Massachusetts Bar Association is a member of the New England Bar Association.
