Bar Profile:
The New Hampshire Bar Association is the oldest statewide bar organization in the United States. Its formation was approved by a special act of the Legislature in 1873. The Association traces its roots to the county bar chapters which had been established for some time; indeed, New Hampshire's Grafton County Bar Association had, as far back as 1793, been examining candidates for admission to the bar and there is a record of a statewide meeting in 1788 of New Hampshire bar members.

The New Hampshire Bar Association has been a unified bar since 1969. As of July 1, 2004, it included 5,550 members, 4,139 on active status.

The great majority of NHBA members practice in small offices. Approximately 60 percent practice in offices of five or fewer attorneys, including 977 solo practitioners.

The aims of the Association, as stated in its constitution, include "...to improve the administration of justice; to foster and maintain high standards of conduct, integrity, competence and public service on the part of those engaged in the practice of law; to safeguard the proper professional interests of the members of the Bar; (and) to provide a forum for the discussion of subjects pertaining to the practice of law, the science of jurisprudence and law reform, and the relations of the Bar to the public...".

One of the main purposes of the association is to ensure a high degree of professionalism. The NHBA each year presents dozens of live, continuing legal education programs; many attorneys take advantage of videotape rental programs or obtain comprehensive written materials produced for each program.

The Bar's Lawyer Referral Service (603-229-0002) matches callers with attorneys who can handle their types of cases. The NHBA also provides reduced-fee referrals and recruits attorneys for its Pro Bono Referral Program. Most Pro Bono cases are referred through an independent organization, the Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC).

Members of the New Hampshire Bar Association also maintain high professional standards and contribute to the aims of the Association through their work on numerous sections and committees.

The Association is an active member of the New England Bar Association.
