The association is governed by a House of Delegates, elected each year at the annual meeting. The House represents the population of lawyers in Rhode Island and controls the administration of affairs of the association. The annual meeting, always held in June, is one of the most popular educational and social programs of the association. Vendors may purchase tabletop exhibit space.
Activity and member participation is high in the bar's 26 committees. The committees work to enhance the practice of law, offer discounts and extra benefits to members, and strengthen relationships within the bar and with the community. Other member programs include, a confidential assistance program, a bi-monthly Bar Journal, legal practice assistance for members, public service legal assistance programs, and other benefits which may be accessed on the bar's website at www.ribar.com.
Continuing legal education is mandatory in Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Bar Association provides more than 70 credited courses throughout the year. Public service activities include three lawyer referral services (full, low-cost and elderly), a legal aid to military services program, as well as a pro bono publico program. Other services include an IOLTA program, a scholarship program, fee arbitration, law-related education programs, and a fund for client reimbursement.
