Slade Sevier, who joined Adams and Reese in 2012 as a Special Counsel in the firm's Nashville office, focuses his practice on litigation and contract negotiation related to construction, real estate development and general business.
In addition to general contract disputes, Slade's litigation practice primarily involves representing owners (public and private), developers, tenants, contractors, subcontractors and designers in various types of construction and real estate related disputes involving issues such as construction and design defects, scheduling, disruption and delay claims, codes violations, licensing requirements, payment claims, mechanics' and materialmen's liens, prompt pay claims, lease disputes, option and purchase disputes, property line disputes, copyright infringement, personal injury, wrongful death and consumer protection act claims (TCPA). A significant portion of this practice has involved mediation, arbitration and judicial settlement conferences.
Slade's transactional practice primarily involves reviewing, drafting and negotiating construction, design, maintenance, service and other agreements related to real estate development. He has extensive experience with healthcare development, the forms of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Documents) and other design and construction contract forms, and the types of projects have included hospital facilities, medical office buildings, senior living facilities, office towers and tenant build-outs, industrial facilities, utility improvements, apartments, condominiums and single-family residential, retail, hospitality and entertainment venues, and mixed-use developments throughout the country.
Some of Slade's representative matters include:
· Representation of an owner/developer of upscale open-air retail centers and obtaining a favorable arbitration award against a co-developer of such a project in Connecticut.
· Representation of a tenant in connection with the selections of and negotiations with the designers and contractors for the build-out of over 150,000 square feet of Class A office space.
· Representation of the nation's largest owner of senior living communities in connection with the drafting and negotiation of design and construction agreements for various facilities around the country, including a $79-million independent living and skilled nursing facility.
· Representation of a general contractor in connection with a dispute with a subcontractor involving disruption, delay and back charge claims on a condominium tower project.
· Representation of a public school board in connection with a dispute with its general contractor and designers involving a defective roofing system installed on new high school.
Slade is also a Patent Attorney registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and a Professional Engineer with an active license in Tennessee. Prior to his legal career, Slade was a civil engineer with a local design firm. This experience involved commercial, industrial and residential developments, construction permitting, zoning and code compliance, surveying, roadway and traffic design, construction supervision, utility and infrastructure design, earthwork, site grading, floodplain analysis, storm water management and dam design.
In the community, Slade serves on the board of Safe Haven Family Shelter, which operates a shelter for homeless families, and serves as a member of the Metropolitan Nashville Stormwater Management Committee, which is a four-year position appointed by the mayor of Nashville.
Slade and his wife Kate have three children, Slade, Grace and John Patton. He enjoys spending time with his family, SEC football, golf, hunting and running.
