Ray's practice encompasses all areas of intellectual property law including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, interference practice and related areas. He has prepared and prosecuted numerous patent applications, foreign and domestic, pertaining to a wide range of technology with a focus on chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications. Ray has prepared and successfully argued numerous appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and conducted patentability, infringement, validity and patent clearance opinions. He has also negotiated and prepared a variety of technology-related agreements including patent licensing, know-how and confidentiality agreements. Ray is an advisor to the State Department on foreign patent laws.
Ray's legal career includes two stints at Monsanto Co. (1964 to 1968 and 1981 to 1996), as well as a position in Xerox Corporation's legal department from 1968 to 1981. Shortly after Ray graduated from law school, he served as Special Counsel to the Attorney General of Ohio (1962-1964). Before law school, Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He was also a Research and Production Chemist with Industrial Rayon Co. in Painsville, Ohio (1957-1961).
