Biography

RICHARD (RICK) L. TREANOR, Ph.D., a member of the firm's Management Committee, chairs the Chemical Patent Prosecution group and co-chairs the Patent Prosecution group. His practice includes opinions, counseling, litigation and important prosecution matters. As a former Examiner in the Special Laws Administration Division of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Dr. Treanor provides an insider's perspective on USPTO policies, processes and procedures, and maintains a solid working relationship with the USPTO staff.

Dr. Treanor possesses a deep understanding of the underlying technologies and sciences involved in his clients' innovations gleaned from years of specialization in chemical patent prosecution, doctoral studies in organic chemistry, and post-doctoral research in the field of nanostructures.

Having prosecuted thousands of patents, Dr. Treanor is especially skilled at handling complicated, high-stakes proceedings before the USPTO. Working with both foreign and domestic clients, he helps to identify patentable products and design-around competitor patents in order to obtain broad protection for his clients' innovations.

Dr. Treanor advises his clients on a wide range of issues including risk assessment, information disclosure requirements, licensing arrangements, strategic planning and the intricacies involved in patent reexamination, reissue, application revival, accelerated examination, and group prosecutions. He also works collaboratively with law firms representing clients with intellectual property challenges to help them navigate the USPTO.

Before practicing law, Dr. Treanor earned a National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Fellowship and conducted post-doctoral study at the Biomolecular Science and Technology Center of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
