Robert J. Alter has extensive experience in handling federal and state tax controversies. Combining his years of experience gained from litigating both for and against the IRS, with a substantive tax law background, Mr. Alter is well known to the IRS and state tax authorities as an experienced, aggressive and smart litigator. Mr. Alter represents business clients and individuals in a broad variety of matters ranging from civil tax audits to defending criminal tax investigations and acting as trial counsel in civil and criminal tax cases at both the federal and state levels. Mr. Alter has recently and successfully litigated a case on behalf of a national mutual fund industry trade group resulting in a decision declaring unconstitutional a section of the New Jersey Gross Income Tax statute which taxed the dividends paid by mutual funds which invested in federal debt obligations. Mr. Alter, who is the annual contributor of the Tax Law Year in Review Supplement to the New Jersey Law Journal, has published numerous articles on federal and state tax law and related topics in that publication, in the New Jersey Lawyer magazine and in the national tax publication, The Journal of Taxation. Mr. Alter is a frequent lecturer to associations of certified public accountants, public accountants, lawyers and corporate tax managers on federal and state tax related topics. Mr. Alter is Chair and Executive Committee Member of the Section of Taxation of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He has been repeatedly appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on the Tax Court, and serves as the IRS Practitioner Liaison of the Section of Taxation of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
