Roetzel & Andress maintains long-standing relationships with clients throughout the media sector, including both online and traditional media. Our attorneys represent newspaper, magazine, and book publishers, television and radio stations, internet content and delivery service providers, cable and satellite broadcasters, and advertising agencies.
Representative Matters
- Represented national newspaper chain, digital company, and subsidiaries in numerous cases involving libel, invasion of privacy, breach of contract, public records and open meetings issues; numerous cases tried to jury verdict
- Led collective bargaining negotiations with various newspaper and television trade and guild unions, including successful negotiation of a new labor agreement that took technological advancements into consideration for the first time
- Obtained emergency relief for a media client on Election Day 2004 in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals against the Ohio secretary of state, preventing enforcement of a directive banning the media from polling places
- Obtained mandamus relief for a media client in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals preventing federal district judge from enforcing a preliminary injunction to remove material from the internet, due to injunction constituting a prior restraint
- Represented a seller in sales of publishing companies
- Provided advice to a book publisher concerning copyright, libel, and privacy issues
- Advised newspaper clients regarding carrier / independent contractor issues
- Represented newspapers in a broad range of employment matters, including defense of discrimination, and wrongful discharge cases, assisting in wage and hour claims, and handling matters before the National Labor Relations Board and other administrative agencies
