History: Ryan Smith & Carbine, Ltd. ("RS&C") is one of the oldest and largest law firms providing legal services in Vermont and eastern New York. The firm traces its roots to December, 1945, when the death of Major General Leonard F. Wing terminated the existence of Fenton, Wing & Morse, a partnership in existence in Rutland, Vermont, since 1922. On January 1, 1946, the surviving partners Charles F. Ryan, R. Clarke Smith and John D. Carbine associated themselves as Ryan Smith & Carbine. Our attorneys have served the region in a full range of legal representation for generations.

Areas of Legal Practice: RS&C is a full-service law firm providing a broad range of legal services. Our practice includes Banking, Bankruptcy, Civil Litigation, Contractors' and Construction Liability, Corporate, Employment Law, Environmental and Land Use Law, Estate Planning, Governmental Law, Health Care, Insurance Defense and Coverage, Limited Liability Company Law, Mediation Services, Medical Malpractice, Partnerships, Probate, Products Liability, Professional Malpractice, Public Utility, Real Estate, School Law, Securities, Ski Area Liability, Taxation, Trademarks and Copyrights, Workers Compensation and Trials and Appeals in all State and Federal Courts. RS&C also represents clients in arbitration and mediation matters and before state agencies, boards and the state legislature. The firm covers the entire State of Vermont and eastern New York State.

Activities of the Members: RS&C has a long record of providing leadership in professional organizations, having supplied six Presidents of the Vermont Bar Association; members of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association, and the Vermont Board of Bar Examiners; Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and the American Academy of Appellate Attorneys; and several attorneys who have been recognized in "The Best Lawyers in America"; along with many other honors conferred on our attorneys. Members have served and are serving on the Boards of Directors of regional banks, corporations and business enterprises. The firm's members have been active in all manner of community activities: the Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland Economic Development Corporation, Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce, College of St. Joseph, Green Mountain College, United Way, Vermont Achievement Center, Rutland County Community Services, and numerous others.
