Sam is a member of Husch Blackwell's Technology, Manufacturing & Transportation team. A patent attorney with more than 30 years' experience, he counsels in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition, trade secret, trade dress, product configuration and design, domain name, Internet, due diligence, licensing, infringement litigation and related areas. Throughout Sam's practice, he has guided small, medium and multinational production companies in developing strategies for acquiring, protecting, licensing and enforcing their intellectual property rights worldwide. He has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications, conducting infringement evaluations and freedom to operate opinions, and prosecuting all types of intellectual property infringements, misuse and dilution.
Sam's extensive experience includes:
•Obtaining the dismissal of a patent infringement case for a multinational manufacturer after inter-partes re-examination of the patent-in-suit resulted in all claims rejected.
Managing the patent and trademark portfolios for many multinational corporations in the consumer products industry.
Managing foreign trademark portfolios for multiple brand divisions of Jarden Corp. and representing them in many foreign opposition matters enforcing clients' rights abroad.
Representing Korea-based dental equipment manufacturer Vatech Co. Ltd. in intellectual property litigation and in several patent re-examination proceedings.
Obtaining summary judgment decisions in patent infringement case for Reward Wall Systems, essentially defeating all charges of infringement for multiple accused products.
Sam's technical focus includes aeronautics, machine tools, plastics, heat exchanger technology, optics, medical devices, mechanical devices of all types, industrial heating and sensing technology, earthmoving equipment, consumer products, footwear, and a variety of control system applications. Sam has litigated all types of intellectual property cases, including appeals before the Patent and Trademark Office.
With a segment of Sam's practice focused on aviation law, his personal background adds to his expertise in this unique area. He is a former U.S. Air Force and Missouri Air National Guard fighter pilot and is currently a registered civilian commercial pilot. He has achieved a combined 5,000 hours of flight time. Before law school, Sam enhanced his technical knowledge in the field by working for a fixed-base operator at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

•Counseled Eagle Industries, the world leader in high quality tactical gear, on intellectual property acquisition, protection and enforcement matters.
•Represented manufacturer Focus Microwaves Inc. in patent application work, intellectual property litigation and patent re-examination proceedings.
•Represented a global manufacturer of performance materials and specialty chemicals, conducting patent prosecution work for polymer and fiber products, including solar absorbing inner layers for automotive glazing, water treatment compositions, high performance hydraulic fluids and other related methods and compositions.
•Prosecuted many inter-partes and ex partes re-examinations for many multinational companies to invalidate patents of competitors.
