The George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the District of Columbia. It was founded in 1865 and has grown to become one of the largest schools in the country. Its total student population numbers approximately 1,920. This figure includes over 1,400 full-time Juris Doctor (J.D.) students, over 250 part-time J.D. students and over 300 graduate law students.

The Law School is one of the nine academic units of The George Washington University, which was originally established by charter of Congress in 1821 as The Columbian College. The University also includes the Columbian School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, the School of Business, the Elliott School of International Affairs, the School of Public Health and Health Services, and the Collegeof Professional Studies.

Situated on the GWcampus in downtown Washington, D.C., the Law School is ideally located in the heart of the nationâ??s capital. It is four blocks from the White House and only minutes away from the Capitol, the Supreme Court and most federal departments and agencies. This location offers students of the Law School a special opportunity to study and observe first-hand the institutions of government at work.

The purpose of the LawSchool is to prepare men and women to meet the needs of society in many fields of law and to encourage scholarly research and writing in law. As a national school, the Law School does not emphasize any particular geographic area in its instruction; therefore, it prepares students to practice law in any part of the country. The Law School seeks to fulfill these objectives through a rich and varied curriculum taught by eminent professors and highly qualified specialized instructors; an extensive clinical law program in which students learn legal skills by actual practice; four law journals that specialize in public law, international law, government contracts law, and intellectual property law; trial practice; participation in moot court competitions; a series of student professional co-curricular activities; studies on an advanced level for foreign as well as for U.S. students; a continuing legal education program for members of the bar, providing them with opportunities for course work within the curriculum; and scholarly research and writing in the law.

The faculty of the LawSchool is one of its greatest strengths. Many faculty members have written leading textbooks in their fields, in areas as diverse as civil procedure, admiralty, professional ethics, taxation, evidence, consumer law and international human rights. In addition to scholarly work, many faculty are involved in developing public policy for government agencies and Congress. Classroom teaching is very much valued by the faculty and student evaluations indicate high regard for the caliber of teaching provided by both full and part-time faculty.

The Law School is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools.
