Recognizing
the need for formal law instruction in the state of Mississippi, the legislature
in 1854 established the Department of Law at The University of Mississippi.
Over the years, the law department has evolved into todayâ??s modern Law Center.
Located in Oxford, Mississippi, on the main campus of The University of
Mississippi, the Law Center is housed in Lamar Hall, named in honor of the late
Mississippian, L.Q.C. Lamar, former Associate Justice of the United States
Supreme Court and one of the first law professors at the university. Oxford, a
small town of approximately 12,000 people, lies nestled in the quiet hills of
North Mississippi, just 75 miles southeast of bustling Memphis, Tennessee, and
170 miles north of the state capital of Jackson.
The
University of Mississippi is the fourth oldest state-supported law school in
the nation. The School of Law is fully approved by the American Bar Association
and is a long-standing member of the Association of American Law Schools. The
law school library collection consists of over 336,487 volumes and equivalents.
The Libraryâ??s website (http://library.law.olemiss.edu) provides access to the
online catalog and other legal resources.
The
law school student body numbers approximately 517, with a recent entering class
of 175 for the fall 2007 term. The faculty numbers thirty-six, eleven of whom
are women. Admission to law school is gained by committee approval, based on an
applicantâ??s credentials. Although the LSAT and GPA are the most important
factors in the admissions process, other considerations are: diversity, grade
progression, quality of undergraduate institution, difficulty of major field of
study, socio-economic circumstances, letters of recommendation and residency.
Since
the first seven students entered The University of Mississippiâ??s fledgling
Department of Law in 1854, thousands of eager students have streamed into the
law school, some already solid in their ambitions, others still searching. For
these new students, the school has served both as a source of inspiration and
as a pragmatic preparation for the task at hand.
