The Moritz
College of Lawâ??s missions, like those of its parent University, are
scholarship, education, and service. The College offers a rigorous academic
program, encompassing both a traditional law school curriculum and electives in
a wide range of topics. First-year students enroll in at least one 9 small
section 9 class designed to enhance the learning process, and each first-year
student experiences an intensive writing and analysis course taught by a
full-time faculty member. Advanced students can elect courses offered through
the clinical programs, which are among the oldest and finest in the country.
Students also can develop professional skills through service on one of five
highly respected academic journals, the Ohio State Law Journal, the Ohio State
Journal on Dispute Resolution, the OhioState Journal of Criminal
Law, I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society, and the Ohio State
Journal of Entrepreneurial Law. The College also has a large Moot Court
Program, in which students can hone their practical legal skills. The College of Law
has an active public service program, including a large Street Law program and
the Pro Bono Research Group, which provides legal research assistance to legal
services attorneys in Ohio.
The summer and semester-long programs at Oxford University
in Oxford, England
enhance the international and comparative dimensions of the Collegeâ??s program
and a summer program in Washington, D.C. provides insight into Washington practice. Extensive involvement
in alternative dispute resolution has made the College a leader in this important
and developing aspect of the law, and the Ohio State Journal on Dispute
Resolution has already made its mark in this arena. The College offers joint
degree programs with a number of other colleges and departments at the
University, including Business Administration, Health Administration, and Medicine
and a number of faculty members hold joint appointments in law and other units.
The College has established the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy
Studies, which supports faculty whose teaching and scholarship
explore law using tools and concepts developed in the social sciences and
humanities. Beginning in Fall 2007, the College
implemented an LL.M. program for foreign-trained law students.
The
educational enterprise of the Moritz College of Law is well supported by the
physical facilities. An addition to and renovation of the existing building has
created space for the growing library collection, which is the fourteenth
largest academic law library in the country. Apartments are available for about
135 law students across the street from the College. The College of Law
is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the
Association of American Law Schools. Graduates have served as distinguished
members of the bar and bench. A significant number have served as elected and
appointed public officials at the local, state, and national levels and in
executive and management positions in business, education and industry.
