Established
in 1925, St. Johnâ??sUniversity School
of Law has an enrollment of approximately 950 students with diverse backgrounds
who have excelled in undergraduate and graduate institutions.
The School of Law offers an excellent academic program
that provides students with a solid foundation in fundamental areas of
substantive and procedural law with significant elective offerings in many
areas, including tax, labor, environmental, real estate and intellectual property.
It holds the honor of being the first (and only) Law School
in the nation to offer a Bankruptcy LL.M. program. The faculty has a
distinguished background in published scholarship and professional activities.
In addition, the school takes pride in its adjunct faculty comprised of
instructors who have achieved prominence as judges, government officials and
private practitioners who offer courses in their respective areas of expertise.
St. Johnâ??s publications -- the Law Review, the
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies, the Journal of Legal Commentary, the
International Law Review, and the American Bankruptcy Institute Law
Review -- have achieved national prominence, as have the Moot Court and
Mock Trial programs.
Students
may participate in civil and criminal externships with district attorneysâ??
offices, U.S. Attorney offices and other governmental agencies or serve as
judicial interns with federal and state judges. Clinical academic credit and
practical experience can be earned through participation in the Schoolâ??s
on-site Child Advocacy Clinic, Elder Law Clinic and Securities Arbitration
Clinic and in its off-site Domestic Violence Clinic, Refugee and Immigration
Rights Clinic and Prosecution Clinic. Additionally, the Center for Professional
Skills affords students valuable experience in trial practice.
St. Johnâ??s UniversitySchool of Law takes pride in its many
graduates who are partners in the tri-state areaâ??s most prestigious law firms,
who are counsel or senior executives in Fortune 500 companies or who have
dedicated themselves to public service. Recent graduates continue to join major
firms, often after having served in clerkships with federal judges. Alumni are
also prominent members of various branches of the government and include many
state and federal judges, several governors and other political figures.
The School of Law is housed in a spacious and
educationally centered facility with state-of-the-art technology throughout the
premises and the Rittenberg Law Library. Internet
access is available through wireless technology even outside the law school
building, and a magnificent Belson Moot Court Room
and several new classrooms are showcases of design and technology.
In 2004, St. Johnâ??s University School
of Law celebrated a successful review of its program of legal education by the
American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools and
welcomed its new Dean, the John V. Brennan Professor of Law and Ethics, Mary C.
Daly, formerly the James H. Quinn Professor of Legal Ethics at Fordham University
School of Law.
