The Dedman School of Law of Southern Methodist
University has a tradition of excellence in legal education and legal
scholarship. The school has a nationally regarded and diverse group of 40 full‑time
faculty who represent a broad spectrum of social and scholarly views. The
faculty work together in a spirit of collegiality and share a devotion to
excellence in classroom teaching and legal scholarship. The highly accomplished
and diverse student body consists of approximately 907 J.D. candidates from over
200 undergraduate institutions throughout the United States,
as well as 80 candidates for graduate degrees from approximately 20 countries.
The School's exemplary physical complex is a quadrangle of four buildings that
occupies six acres on the SMU campus. The largest of the buildings is Underwood
Law Library, which features an over a half a million volume open‑stack
collection, the largest private legal collection in the Southwest.
The school offers a broad and rich Juris Doctor
curriculum and awards combined degrees in business (J.D./M.B.A.) and economics
(J.D./M.A.). The school offers strong civil and criminal clinical education
programs and a clinical program in taxation. The school also has a tradition of
strength in its International Law program. The latter is enhanced by the
school's summer program at Oxford University,
and by the Center for Pacific Rim Legal Studies and the Center for NAFTA and
Latin American Studies.
