ABA Approved Since 1923
Founded in
1867, Washington University School of Law is the oldest private law school in continuous
operation west of the Mississippi River. A charter
member of the AALS and accredited by the ABA,
the school was one of the first law schools to graduate women. The law school
is located on the beautiful and serene 169-acre Hilltop Campus bordered by
Forest Park (the site of the 1904 Worldâ??s Fair) and the residential communities
of Clayton and University City.
The Washington University faculty is dedicated to the
professional education and development of its students. The student/faculty
ratio of 12:1 and the participation of experienced practicing lawyers in
selected skills courses permit many small classes and seminars during the second
and third years. Yearly programs presented by the Schoolâ??s Center for
Interdisciplinary Studies, Whitney R. Harris Institute for Global Legal Studies
and Public Interest Law Speakers Series complement the academic program.
Distinctive features include a faculty nationally recognized for its
accessibility to students and a respected clinical program in which every student
is guaranteed enrollment in at least one clinic.
The School of Law offers a Masters degree (LL.M.) in
Taxation and a LL.M. in U.S. Law for International Students, with a new LL.M.
program in Intellectual Property. Combined study programs exist with eight
other Washington University
graduate departments: Social Work (J.D./M.S.W.); the
Health Administration Department of the School of Medicine
(J.D./ M.H.A.); Business (J.D./M.B.A); Economics (J.D./M.S.Ec.); Political
Science (J.D./M.A.); East Asian Studies (J.D./M.A.); European Studies (J.D./M.A.);
Engineering and Applied Science (J.D./M.S. or M.A.). Additional combined-degree
programs are available by arrangement with other departments.
The School of Law
publishes three student-edited law review periodicals, the Washington University
Law Quarterly, Washington University Journal of Law and Policy, and Washington University Global Studies Law
Review. A very active moot court program, mock trial competitions and
negotiation and client counseling competitions are available. Law students
participate in a variety of other activities, including the Womenâ??s Law Caucus,
the National Association for Public Interest Law, the Black Law Students
Association, the Federalist Society, and the Student Bar Association.
The student body is self-regulated through the Law School Honor Council.
Students are eligible for election to the Order of the Coif. Students also
serve on many joint committees with faculty members.
The School of Law moved into its new building,
Anheuser-Busch Hall, in December, 1996. The new building combines traditional
architecture with a modern, state-of-the-art learning environment.
