The
University of Washington School of Law offers programs
of study leading to the Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master
of Law (LL.M.) in Asian and Comparative Law, Law of Sustainable International
Development, Intellectual Property Law and Policy, Taxation, and the Doctor of
Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Asian and Comparative Law.
Seattle, home of the University of Washington,
is the gateway to the Pacific Rim. Its
economic strength, rich cultural resources, physical beauty and moderate
climate attract visitors and commerce from around the world. The city of Seattle is located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, an
inland body of water connected to the Pacific Ocean,
and is bordered by the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.
The
active international community in Seattle
includes high technology firms, international banks and major corporations such
as Boeing and Microsoft. The Port of Seattle is one of the largest container ports in the United States and is the top port for container
exports to Asia. In addition to city, state
and federal institutions dealing with international commerce and trade,
international organizations located in Seattle
include the Japan-American Society, the Washington State China Relations
Council, the World Affairs Council and the Washington Council on International
Trade.
The
University of Washington
is widely considered one of the leading research universities in the United States.
The University is located in a residential area about four miles from the
center of Seattle and is bordered by Lake
Washington and PortageBay. Enrollment at the
University is approximately 34,000 students with a full-time teaching faculty
of 2,800. The University is well known for its strength in areas such as
international studies, marine affairs, environmental studies and medicine.
The
School of Law was first organized in 1899 and is
fully accredited. The newly built William H. Gates Hall has moved the law
school back on to the main University campus. For the first time in 30 years,
all the programs of the School are under one roof-the library, the classrooms,
the Schoolâ??s clinics and the offices of administration. The University of Washington Law School is recognized as one of the leading
law schools in the UnitedStates.
The
School of Law offers a diverse curriculum. J.D.
law students number about 500 and graduate students number about 150. There is
an excellent ratio of students to faculty (approximately 13:1) with many small
classes and the opportunity for close student-faculty contact. Faculty members
generally have an open-door policy to encourage contact and informal
discussions with students.
The
Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library is one of the finest law libraries in the
country. Its collection is among the largest university law collections on the
West Coast and currently numbers more than 450,000 volumes. Access to legal and
non-legal online databases, CD-Rom products and electronic information is
enhanced through use of WESTLAW, LEXIS, DIALOG, NEXIS and other online
databases, CD-Rom products and electronic information sources. A superb staff
of librarians, technicians and students support the research, writing and
curricular needs of law students and faculty.
