ABA Approved Since 1975
NCA Approved
Since 2001
Americaâ??s leader in part-time, year-round legal education, Thomas M.Cooley LawSchool was established by
former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas E. Brennan and a group of
dedicated lawyers and judges.
Named for Michiganâ??s renowned
Judge Cooley, the school is committed to teaching students the knowledge,
skills and ethics they will need to become excellent lawyers. The American Bar Association
approved Thomas Cooley Law School in 1978. As an independent,
non-profit, graduate institution, Thomas Cooley enjoys the reputation of a
tough law school, run by experienced lawyers and judges. Its faculty, students
and alumni take pride in the schoolâ??s close contacts with the bench and bar.
In 2006,
the law school received the E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award as selected by the ABA
Standing Committee on Professionalism for meeting the criteria involved in establishing
9 effective, on-going programs to help ensure the maintenance of the highest
principles of integrity and dedication to the legal profession and the public.
9 The law school focuses on the importance of incorporating ethics and professionalism
into the law school curriculum. Cooley has adopted a Professionalism Plan
entitled 9 Creating a Culture of Professionalism in Law School:
The Thomas M. Cooley Law School Experience 9 and established a Center for
Ethics and Responsibility. The Center works to develop professional character-building
programs; encourages research, study and education regarding professional
responsibility and ethics; and coordinates and promotes Cooleyâ??s efforts in
professionalism, ethics, and public service. A professionalism library has also
been established for the bench and bar, as well as the Cooley community.
With ABA acquiescence of the law schoolâ??s branch campuses in
Auburn Hills and Grand Rapids,
Cooley became the only accredited law school with three branch locations.
Cooley is also the only law school with close ties to two Carnegie-rated
research universities-Oakland University and Western MichiganUniversity.
The law
schoolâ??s main campus is located in Lansing
near the State Capitol of Michigan and governmental agencies; the state
legislature; federal, state and local courts; and a number of major law firms,
providing externship opportunities and networking possibilities. The main campus
features a ten-story, state-of-the-art Cooley Center
building that includes a $2.8 million dollar multi-courtroom complex devoted to
trial and appellate skills. The Sixty Plus, Elder Law Clinic, the Cooley Law School Innocence Project, the Estate Planning Clinic,
and the externship program are located in the Cooley Center.
The main Cooley Campus also includes the 65,000 square foot
Brennan Law Library and the 100,000 square foot Temple Building,
which houses additional classroom and office space and a large auditorium. Students at all three campuses have access to the most
current technology, including wireless internet access.
Cooleyâ??s Grand Rapids campus now
occupies a new 100,000 square foot facility and is located in the Heartside District in the midst of an urban renaissance
area with a thriving business sector, a lively arts
and entertainment culture, and a wealth of employment opportunities. The Cooley GrandRapids Law Center is an award-winning building
renovation, and includes a spacious, attractive law library and
state-of-the-art courtrooms.
Cooleyâ??s Auburn Hills branch in Auburn Hills is located in the heart
of Oakland County, where more than 100 Fortune 500
companies have their headquarters.
The law
school is organized on a 12-month academic year, consisting of three full
15-week terms of school. Each term meets the definition of a full semester.
Like the terms of the English Courts of Common Law, Thomas Cooleyâ??s three
academic terms are designated Hilary Term (January to April), Trinity Term (May
to August), and Michaelmas Term (September to December).
Thomas
Cooley students typically attend classes part-time which permits full-time
employment. Still, they graduate in three years or less by taking advantage of
Cooleyâ??s year round program. Cooley also has the first and largest ABA-approved
Weekend Program.
The Sixty
Plus, Elder Law Clinic, Thomas Cooleyâ??s award-winning clinic for elderly
citizens, permits students to earn academic credit representing real clients.
Directed studies, trial workshops, law review, and moot court programs enrich
the curriculum. Because Thomas Cooley has a national student body, civil and
criminal practice courses for New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Florida, Indiana,
and Illinois
are offered.
Thomas
Cooleyâ??s diverse student body is over 3,300; about 47 percent are women; 64
percent hail from out-of-state; 30 percent are racial minorities; and 11
percent hold advanced degrees.
Thomas
Cooleyâ??s nationally and internationally recognized externship program places
final-year students in real-life work settings to gain practical experience in
the legal settings of their choice. This dynamic program provides students with
experience, confidence and contacts to provide a seamless transition from
school to career.
