ABA Approved Since 1998
Founded in
1861, Chapman University
is one of the oldest, most prestigious private universities in California. Chapman University
traces its roots to Hesperian College, opened at the very hour of Abraham
Lincolnâ??s inauguration as the 16th U.S. president. Chapman University
announced the establishment of a new law school in September 1994 and in 1999,
a permanent new law school building was completed. Chapman University School of
Law was granted full approval by the ABA
in August 2002 and The Association of American Law Schools granted membership
in January 2006.
The
principal building, rising four stories and providing 133,000 square feet of
floor space, offers an efficient and pleasant learning environment for
students. Classrooms and seminar rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art
technology for enhanced teaching and learning, and are capable of accommodating
future changes in electronic, visual and on-site learning. Walk through Chapman
University School of Lawâ??s Kennedy Hall and you are likely to hear a 9 buzz 9.
This is the sound of a dynamic learning environment, where people are
passionately engaged in their work. The law school building is alive with
students and faculty debate, collaborative research, cutting edge symposia, and
a sense of mutual purpose: to prepare the next generation of legal
practitioners and scholars to become ethical and successful attorneys. The law
school has two courtrooms, one designed for trials and the other for appellate
hearings, provide fully equipped facilities for trial advocacy exercises, mock
trial and moot court competitions, and formal hearings by visiting courts.
The
beautiful Rinker Law Library features electronic data retrieval and research
facilities and provides comfortable, quiet study areas and computer labs. The
library is designed to meet the needs of legal education in the twenty-first
century. It features over 40,000 square feet of space, seating for 300 with
computer access at each seat, contains 295,000 volumes and volume equivalents.
The third floor of the library houses one electronic classroom and a computer
lab offering students convenient access to research and word processing
programs. The library is open over 100 hours per week.
The law
school student body numbers approximately 550 with a recent entering class of
170 for the fall 2009 term. The Schoolof Law has a faculty of
sixty, four of whom are former clerks to U.S. Supreme Court justices. Students
attending Chapman University School of Law have a wide variety of academic
options beyond the core required courses, including a range of electives,
multiple advanced degrees, joint degree programs, externships, emphasis
programs, study abroad opportunities and academic support.
Admission
to Chapman University School of Law is based on many factors and gained by committee
approval. The applicantâ??s entire file is considered in the review process. The
LSAT and GPA are important factors in the admission process. We also consider
additional indicators of potential to succeed in law school such as: nature
& rigor of undergrad discipline, upward trend in academic performance,
types of courses completed, writing ability, employment record, graduate level
courses taken & degrees earned, scholarly achievements, community & volunteer
service, research projects, demonstrated leadership ability, fluency in foreign
languages, and other maturing experiences.
