Song Cheng is a Tax Controversy and Transfer Pricing partner in Mayer Brown's Chicago office. He has extensive experience representing companies in US and international tax disputes, including audits, administrative appeals, and litigation. Song is also experienced in advising companies on structuring inter-company transactions with particular emphasis on debt vs. equity issues and cross-border intangible property and services transactions. Song is fluent in several Chinese languages and has experience advising companies on China-related tax matters.
Before attending law school, Song studied business management and worked as a financial analyst for General Electric. Song's experience prior to joining Mayer Brown also included clerkships at the Illinois Appellate Court and the Minnesota Supreme Court. Since joining Mayer Brown in 2006, Song has done significant pro bono work, including briefing and arguing an appeal before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and successfully settling a tax dispute with the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of a small business owner.
Song became a partner in 2012 and is recognized in the 2012 Edition of International Tax Review's Tax Controversy Leaders Guide as a leading tax controversy lawyer in the US.
Mayer Brown was recently named Tax Controversy Team of the Year in the Legal 500 United States Awards 2014. Mayer Brown is 'among the best' and fields a large team...dedicated exclusively to tax controversy and transfer pricing, said Legal 500 and its sources in the 2014 US edition. The firm's extensive experience spans the full gamut of controversy work, from administrative appeals to litigation in the trial court and at appellate court level.
