Steele B. (Al) Windle, III's principal area of practice is construction law.
Al has represented general contractors, owners, developers, subcontractors, vendors and sureties at every stage of a construction project, including the evaluation of the project, licensing, preparation of contract documents, bid preparation, bid mistakes, bid protests, change order negotiations, project correspondence, claim preparation, defense of claims, termination, project close-out and final dispute resolution through negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation.
Al has extensive experience prosecuting and defending extra work, delay, acceleration, cumulative impact and inefficiency claims on private and public projects.
Al regularly handles cases involving construction defects and disputes over insurance coverage for construction defects. Al has experience defending construction defect and water intrusion claims and trying to obstruct insurance coverage to protect his clients against the claims.
Al also regularly handles matters for payment and performance bond sureties on all types of commercial construction projects.
Al has arbitrated or litigated numerous construction disputes arising from, among other things, a $57M condominium project in Florida, a $70M highway project in North Carolina, a $100M hospital project in North Carolina, a $20M military housing project in Dugway, Utah, a $100M power plant in North Carolina and a $60M oil spill remediation project in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama.
Al is a member of the Construction Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association where he has served as a Director on the Construction Law Section Council (1995-1997 and 1998-1990) and is also a member of the Construction Forum of the American Bar Association. Al is on the panel of construction arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. Al is also a member of the State Bar of Georgia.
Al has written many articles on construction law, construction contracting and frequently lectures on construction law related topics.
