Stephen is a partner at Starnes Davis Florie and serves as a member of the firm's recruiting committee. Practice The majority of Stephen's practice is devoted to defending nursing home malpractice claims, medical malpractice claims, and general insurance litigation, including defense of direct claims against insurance companies for breach of contract, bad faith, and fraud, although he practices extensively in a variety of other areas, including commercial litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants, and in the area of manufactured housing litigation. Stephen has represented various national and regional companies, including Pro Assurance, Farmers Insurance, Harbert International, Robinson Adams, Western Heritage Insurance Company, Xerox, and Scottsdale Insurance. Highlights * Secured final summary judgment for pediatric orthopedic surgeon in medical malpractice lawsuit. * Secured a reversal by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals of a United States District Court Order dismissing a 9 U.S.C. 4 Complaint to Compel Arbitration for lack of subject matter jurisdiction. * Successfully compelled malpractice claims against nursing home in Arkansas into arbitration. * Obtained complete dismissal and attorney fee award on behalf of local real estate company in action stemming from property dispute. * Currently defending numerous physicians, healthcare providers, and nursing homes in variety of medical malpractice and wrongful death actions. * Currently representing insurers throughout State of Alabama in numerous bad faith, fraud, and breach of contract claims. Honors And Awards Stephen has been named a Rising Star for the state of Alabama by the 2011 edition of Alabama Super Lawyers® magazine. Stephen was appointed as Vice Chair of the ABA TIPS Medicine and Law General Committee, serves as Chair of the TIPS Committee of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, and was selected as a 2011-2012 TIPS NOW Fellow in the American Bar Association Tort, Trial, and Insurance Practice Section. Stephen also serves as a member of the United States Supreme Court Historical Society and is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama Bar Association, and the Alabama Defense Lawyers' Association.
