Our broad experience in retail, multifamily and affordable housing, office and industrial allows us to gather all the pieces and, with our experience in land assemblage, entitlements, development, leasing and finance, we help create commendable mixed use projects.
Through decades of real estate practice and industry experience Sutherland developed a diverse and sophisticated mixed use practice. We represent all segments of the industry, including developers, lenders and investors, with purchase, sale, financing and leasing transactions in major markets across the United States. We work with private equity groups, pension funds and their advisors who invest in mixed use properties via acquisitions, joint ventures and participating mortgage financing. We also represent banks that are construction lenders for mixed use projects.
We see all the different facets of real estate transactions and understand the different types of ownership structures that a mixed use project can take, as well as the ramifications that different approaches can have on the short-term and future success of a project. We focus on what it takes to get a deal done; understand our clients’ goals and don’t get bogged down in the unimportant aspects.

Familiarity with different retail formats. We regularly assist clients with all aspects of the different retail product types, including closed mall, strip center, stand-alone retail and street retail.
Creative solutions. We possess a keen understanding of the business objectives of our clients, and we suggest fresh ideas and approaches.
Relationships with industry players. We work with some of the biggest companies in the sector, and we know their world view. For example, when our clients want to negotiate leases with major national retailers, our previous experience with that retailer can be invaluable.
Proactive vision. We anticipate and deal with all of the issues that confront developers on the ground. For example, we know how to plan for future air rights that could prove to be a lucrative or deal-breaking aspect of a development.

Sutherland represents the Sembler Company in major retail developments throughout the Southeast and Puerto Rico.
Sutherland represented the Sembler Company, a regional developer of retail and mixed use facilities in the development, purchase and sale of projects in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and Puerto Rico consisting of more than 5 million square feet of retail space.
Sutherland counsels Cypress Equities in mixed use and retail projects of more than 1.5 million square feet.
We counseled a developer in connection with the development of shopping centers totaling more than 1.5 million square feet. The properties are in Alabama, North Carolina and New Jersey.
Sutherland represents Ben Carter Properties in multiple retail developments throughout the Southeast.
Sutherland represented Ben Carter Properties in the acquisition, development, leasing and financing, and disposition of several regional retail and mixed-use projects and handled the assemblage of 30-plus parcels in metro Atlanta for the development of a landmark luxury project.
