    Biography

    Tom Akin is a senior partner in the firm's Toronto office, with more than 30 years of experience focusing on corporate income taxation and GST/sales taxes, with special emphasis on transfer pricing, tax litigation and tax dispute resolution.

    Mr. Akin has been recognized by the International Tax Review as one of Canada's top 10 tax advisors and by Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers as a leading tax advisor, and a tax litigation specialist. He appears in all editions of the LEXPERT/The American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, published by Lexpert and American Lawyer and most recently was recognized in the area of corporate tax litigation. He also appears in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, in the areas of corporate tax-transfer pricing, corporate tax litigation, and commodity tax/customs. Mr. Akin is also listed in the Guide to the World's Leading Tax Advisers, and most recently has been listed in all editions of Euromoney, the World's leading transfer pricing advisors and in the International Tax Review's, World Tax as a leading transfer pricing advisor.

    Articles and conference papers authored by him cover a variety of tax litigation, transfer pricing, domestic and international corporate income tax, sales and commodity tax and customs and trade matters.

    Mr. Akin is a Councillor of the International Fiscal Association (Canadian Branch), Chair of the Foreign Lawyers' Forum of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, immediate past-chair of the Tax Court Bench and Bar Committee, past-chair of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal Bench and Bar Committee and past-chair of the Metropolitan Toronto Board of Trade Tax Committee. Mr. Akin was also a member of the Canada Revenue Agency Appeals Advisory Committee and has been an elected member of the Council of the Ontario Bar Association. In addition, he is an editor of the CCH Canadian GST & Commodity Tax Cases.

    Mr. Akin was a member of the Tax Reform Sales Tax Advisory Committee to the Minister of Finance of Canada and was chair of the National Sales and Commodity Tax Section of the Canadian Bar Association and of the International Trade Committee of the Metropolitan Toronto Board of Trade.

    Mr. Akin graduated from Dalhousie University with his B.Sc. in 1972 and his MBA in 1974. He received his LLB from Dalhousie University in 1977.
