Tom Akin is a senior partner in the firm's Toronto office. He practises in all major areas of taxation, with special emphasis on tax litigation and tax dispute resolution, transfer pricing, corporate income tax, GST and provincial sales tax. Mr. Akin appears in all editions of the Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, published by Lexpert and American Lawyer, in the areas of tax litigation and indirect tax. He also appears in the 2005 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, in the areas of tax litigation, corporate tax and indirect tax. Mr. Akin has also been recognized by the International Tax Review as one of Canada's top 10 tax advisors and by Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers as a leading tax advisor and tax litigation specialist. He also appears in Euromoney Legal Media Group's 2005 Guide to the World's Leading Tax Lawyers, its 2006 Guide to the World's Leading Transfer Pricing Advisers and in the International Tax Review's World Tax 2005, as a leading advisor in the areas of tax controversy, transfer pricing and indirect taxes. Articles and conference papers authored by him cover a variety of income tax, sales and commodity tax and customs and trade matters. Mr. Akin is chair of the Tax Court Bench and Bar Committee, International Fiscal Association (Canadian Branch) Councillor, immediate past-chair of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal Bench and Bar Committee and past-chair of the Metropolitan Toronto Board of Trade Tax Committee. Mr. Akin was also a member of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency Appeals Advisory Committee and has been an elected member of the Council of the Ontario Bar Association. In addition, he is an editor of the CCH Canadian GST & Commodity Tax Cases. Mr. Akin was a member of the Tax Reform Sales Tax Advisory Committee to the Minister of Finance of Canada and was chair of the National Sales and Commodity Tax Section of the Canadian Bar Association and of the International Trade Committee of the Metropolitan Toronto Board of Trade. Mr. Akin graduated from Dalhousie University with his B.Sc. in 1972 and his MBA in 1974. He received his LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 1977. |
