Thomas Appleman is a litigator in Sutherland's Houston office. He is committed to finding creative and efficient solutions to complex disputes. Thomas's practice involves all segments of the energy industry - upstream, downstream, and service firms - and encompasses crisis management, trials, internal investigations, and regulatory actions. His experience includes briefing substantive motions, taking depositions, conducting interviews and investigations, and negotiating and drafting licenses and protocols.

Thomas represented an international drilling contractor in connection with the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, which included multiple civil and criminal government investigations. He served on the client's trial team during separate eight-week and two-week bench trials in the multi-district proceedings arising from the oil spill. Thomas managed many of the issues presented by the blowout prevention equipment, including deposing and serving as trial second-chair for key expert witnesses. Thomas represented a client in connection with a multi-party and government investigation into the causes of a 2013 gas well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. For that client, he drafted and coordinated the inspection protocol for the drilling rig's blowout prevention equipment.

Thomas regularly works with clients to navigate emerging issues in hydraulic fracturing. He helped negotiate and draft a license agreement for a mobile waste-water treatment unit, and he contributes to a database of regulations and recent developments for major shale plays across the country.

Prior to joining Sutherland, Thomas worked at both the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Lower Colorado River Authority on a variety of regulatory and environmental compliance matters.
