Practice/Industry Group Overview

The Employment Law Practice Group focuses on the following areas of employment and labor law:

  • Representation of businesses with regard to charges brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (race, gender, sex, national origin and sexual harassment discrimination), the Family Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. The Group frequently appears before the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and EEOC and has taken a significant number of cases to trial in the Pennsylvania federal courts and before the PHRC.

  • The group is part of Thomas Thomas and Hafer LLP, the largest litigation oriented firm between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. In the areas where we practice, we routinely try more cases that almost all other firms.

  • The group represents businesses and, most commonly, public employers in NLRB or PLRB proceedings including unfair labor practices, representation cases, and collective bargaining including Act 111 interest arbitrations. One group member, Paul J. Dellasega, Esquire, serves as an neutral arbitrator for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Mediation.

  • The group has a growing subspecialty in Fair Labor Standards cases due to the increasing volume of FLSA complaints brought before the Department of Labor. The group has a growing practice in Whistleblower cases both under federal and Pennsylvania law. The group also litigates issues arising under the Pennsylvania Wage Payment and Collection Law.

  • The members of the group have a combined legal experience of over 100 years.

  • The group is realistic about the costs of legal services and understands that many smaller business cannot defend otherwise defensible claims due to the high billing rates of major city law firms. The group attempts to structure its fee arrangements under the principle "Central Pennsylvania fees for Central Pennsylvania businesses," and to apply this principle equally to our Pittsburgh and Lehigh Valley offices.
