TOSTES E ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS law firm was established in Rio de Janeiro in April 1973 by the lawyers Sergio Tostes, Edmundo Lins Neto (one of the most traditional lawyers of Rio de Janeiro) and James Clark. Sergio Tostes, master in Comparative Case Law by the University of New York and Law by the Harvard Law School, had been a partner of one of the main Brazilian law firms and foreign associate of one of the most distinguished US Law Firms with headquarters in Washington, DC.

The intention of combining the international expertise developed by Sergio Tostes with the vast expertise of Edmundo Lins Neto in litigation law resulted in the establishment of a law firm qualified to operate with equal capacity to provide legal advice to clients and representation services before the Judiciary.

The office operates under the management of Sergio Tostes, who, conciliating his work as a lawyer, held a leading position at the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/RJ), including the Presidency of the Ethics and Discipline Court, which is the maximum body in the legal segment to judge the ethical behavior of legal professionals.

The office adopted the name of TOSTES E ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS after the retirement of Edmundo Lins Neto, when Dr. Olavo Tostes Filho, formerly a Judge, Associate Justice, General Magistrate of the Supreme Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro and President of TRE-RJ, joined the firm.

Besides its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, TOSTES E ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS - TAA, presently holds branches in Brasília and São Paulo. It has also affiliated offices in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Recife (Pernambuco) and a representative in New York, United States of America. Its team of lawyers is formed by 15 partners, 50 associates, 2 consultants (1 being foreign) and more than 30 trainees.

With an organizational structure consistent with the characteristic of personalized approach to clients, the office is currently growing. In order to grow without loosing its main characteristic, it is fully dedicated to meet the specific interests and needs of each client, by adopting a proactive attitude, whereby all the firm's professionals comprise multidisciplinary study groups aiming at the analysis and formulation of legal solutions.

The general supervision of the several legal sectors is under the responsibility of the partners Maria Hetilene Gomes Tostes, André Hermanny Tostes, Rui Meier, Antonio Carlos Vasconcellos and Jorge Luiz, who coordinate and integrate the various areas of expertise in the office. The uniform operation of its members, with respect to individual qualities and characteristics, is a trademark of the law firm, which adopts, as a general rule, the philosophy that each client will always be served by a certain partner and his assistants.

The leadership and supervision of all activities in the office are currently carried out by the senior partners Sergio Tostes and Miguel Pachá, former president of the Supreme Court of the State of Rio de Janeiro, who became partner of the office after his retirement as Associate Justice. TAA relies also on the permanent assistance and guidance of Olavo Tostes Filho.
