BiographyBill Townsley was born in Great Bend, Kansas. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in 1985 and his Juris Doctor, with honors, from Washburn University in 1989. While at Washburn, he served as the managing editor of the Washburn Law Journal, was a member of the national moot court team, and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers. He was admitted to the Kansas bar and joined Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson & Kitch, L.L.C. in 1989. He currently serves the Firm as a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Townsley practices primarily in the areas of civil litigation and insurance defense, including workers compensation. He concentrates on disputes regarding the assessment of liability and the evaluation of damages in personal injury claims, workers compensation cases and general business litigation claims. He has achieved successes in each of these areas including: Preserved the "exclusive remedy" and "fellow servant" doctrines of workers compensation in the Kansas Supreme Court when the Court reversed a district court order allowing a civil action between co-employees acting in the scope of employment. (Scott v Hughes, 281 Kan 642, 1132 P3d 889, 2006) Defense verdict for a municipality in a two-week jury trial of a wrongful death claim asserted by the family of an inmate who died while working for the city in a community service setting. Successful arbitration of multi-million dollar dispute concerning intellectual property rights arising out of dinosaur fossil discovery and sale. Mr. Townsley is a member of the Wichita, Kansas, and American Bar Associations. He currently serves as President of the Wichita Bar Association and as a member of the Wichita Bar Foundation Board of Directors. He is a past president of the KBA Litigation Section and the KBA Insurance Law Section. He is also a member of the KBA Bench and Bar committee and the Kansas Bar Foundation Planned Giving Committee. Mr. Townsley also is a member of the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel. He is listed in the publication The Best Lawyers in America® under the areas of Insurance Law and Workers' Compensation Law. Mr. Townsley is the author of Lender Liability: A Survey of Theories, Thoughts and Trends," 28 Washburn Law Journal 238 (1988). He is also the author of many articles and seminar presentations regarding insurance defense issues, workers compensation and employment law. Articles and seminar presentations which have been produced recently include: "Employer-Employee Relationships," 2007 Division of Workers Compensation State Seminar, Kansas Department of Labor. "Professional Relationships and Pro Bono Commitment," 2007 Kansas Orientation to Practice Seminar, Wichita Bar Association. Mr. Townsley has been married for 26 years and is the father of four children who attend Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School and Wichita State University. He is active in several civic organizations including the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of the Plains, and the Wichita River Festival organization.
