Bill Slaughter is a founding member of the firm. His practice is concentrated in the areas of public finance, state and local government law, governmental relations and civil litigation. Mr. Slaughter has represented state and local government issuers and underwriters in some of the most complex financing transactions in the State of Alabama, and he also has extensive experience in litigation concerning significant constitutional and public law issues. His litigation practice has included successful appellate work in the United States Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Alabama. In addition, Mr. Slaughter has substantial experience in preparing legislation and assisting clients in the legislative process.
Mr. Slaughter began his legal career in 1966 with a large firm in Birmingham. In 1968 he joined Litton Industries, Inc., at the time the corporate parent of The Rust Engineering Company. He served as Vice President, Finance for Rust in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then Vice President, Finance of Litton's Industrial Systems and Equipment Group in Los Angeles, California. He returned to Alabama in 1973 to join in the founding of the firm.
Mr. Slaughter served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1987-1990, and was a member of the Alabama Commission on Tax and Fiscal Policy formed by the Legislature in 1990. In 2008, he was named to the Board of Directors of the Alabama Trust Fund, an irrevocable, permanent trust fund established to capture future revenues from sales of offshore drilling rights by the State of Alabama and from royalties on the resulting gas production. In addition, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Cooper Green Hospital, the public hospital of Jefferson County, Alabama, South Highlands Hospital, a 501(c)(3) acute care hospital, and Indian Springs School. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Public Finance) , in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business (Banking and Finance: Public Finance) and in Alabama Super Lawyers. In addition, Mr. Slaughter was recognized in the Birmingham Business Journal's 2006 and 2007 "Best of the Bar" polls in the field of governmental relations.
