The global financial crisis has sparked questions about the conceptual foundations of a financial sector that has grown unwatched during the past three decades, fuelled by an uncontrollable desire to accumulate profits, individualism, extreme liberalisation and deregulation. Voices worldwide are calling for reforms and for the inclusion of ethical, social, collective, human and ecological dimensions in any financial and economic policy. This period of transition and re-strategising presents an ideal opportunity for Islamic finance structures to offer alternative funding sources to innovative infrastructure projects in the alternative energy sectors that will likely be the target of many investment ventures in the near future.
