Who Helped You Build Your Business?

At a recent campaign stop in Roanoke, Virginia, President Obama said that successful business owners didn’t become successful on their own.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

I counsel start-ups to have a group of informal advisers - other entrepreneurs at different business stages - as well as relationships with professionals such as CPAs, commercial insurance agents, bankers, financial advisors and business attorneys. It is immensely helpful to learn from people who have done it before and can anticipate the bottlenecks.

Who has helped you become successful?
