When the Oakland Raiders
brought a major lawsuit against
the National Football League (NFL)
in California's Santa Clara Superior Court
in late 1996, the case had all the trappings
of a classic gridiron showdown. On one side
stood the rough-and-tumble Raiders, the
epitome of in-your-face rebellion. On the
other stood the NFL, the establishment,
if you will, overseer of one of the most
popular and prosperous spectator sports
in the world.
