On December 16, 2003, President Bush signed into law the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 (CAN-SPAM Act) to combat the influx of unsolicited e-mail, most commonly known as "spam." The new law sets forth guidelines on how consumers can reduce the volume of unwanted e-mail and, more importantly, establishes civil and criminal penalties against those who violate the Act.
