Type of legal system The Cyprus legal system is largely based on common law. Cyprus, as a former British colony, inherited common law doctrines and principles which were codified into legislation when the Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960. The Cyprus legal system benefits from the certainty of a codified law and the flexibility of well-developed common law and equity principles.
