Investors Petition SEC for Climate Disclosure Rules

On September 18, 2007, a group of state pension plans and institutional investors, who together control $1.5 trillion in assets, joined environmental groups to petition the SEC to promulgate a rule that forces companies to disclose a greater range of climate change-related risks. To that end, the group -- organized by Ceres, a coalition of environmentalists and investors -- asked the SEC to issue an opinion letter explicitly requiring disclosure of climate change-related risks as part of the mandatory disclosures under Section 13 of the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934 (the "Exchange Act"), 15 U.S.C. ยง 78m.
