Last year about 15 million visitors from France, Japan, the UK and 24 other Visa Waiver countries traveled without visas to the United States for up to 90 days. Many make frequent trips for business or tourism. Effective June 26, 2005, these visitors must have a machine-readable passport or risk being excluded upon arrival. Airlines will be fined $3,300 per violation. Note that citizens of Belgium, Andorra Brunei, Liechtenstein and Slovenia have already been required to present a machine-readable passport for visa-free travel since 2003.
