Wi-Fi, or IEEE 802.11, is beginning to morph from a "techie" toy into a mainline consumer product and service. The beguilingly simple concept is to provide wireless high-speed broadband connectivity over "free" spectrum shared with other users. Buy and install a simple box for several hundred dollars, connect to a DSL line or cable modem, and surf the world wide web without the constraint of wires.
