Both the Departments of Homeland Security and State recently issued announcements reminding all persons traveling from the 27 Visa Waiver Program countries that as of June 26, 2005, they must have a machine-readable passport to enter the United States without a visa. Machine-readable passports have a sequence of lines that can be electronically read at U.S. ports of entry to confirm the passport holder's identity and obtain other information typically found on a passport's inside cover.
