The University
The University
of Arizona was founded in
1885 and is one of the nation's leading research universities, ranked 16th for
research and development expenditures among public universities in 2002 by the
National Science Foundation. The Faculty of the University
of Arizona includes scores of
nationally recognized scholars and teachers, including a Nobel laureate, many
Sloan, Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellows, Fulbright scholars and members of the
National Academy of Sciences and Institute
of Medicine. The College of Law,
founded in 1915, is the oldest law school in Arizona and has a rich and distinguished
history. We have a full‑time JD program, two LLM programs, and an SJD
program with a total of approximately 500 enrolled students each year. The College of Law Library is one of the best legal
research facilities in the Southwest, with a collection of over 420,000 volumes
and the latest in computer‑based legal research through Lexis, Westlaw
and Internet access.
The Students
The students of the College of Law
are a talented and diverse group culturally, educationally and geographically
with rich work and volunteer experience. Each year about 150 JD candidates
enroll in an entering class, and about 30 students with law degrees enroll in
our two LL.M. programs in International Trade Law and in Indigenous Peoples Law
and Policy. A limited‑enrollment SJD program is available to students
seeking an intellectually challenging opportunity for academic specialization.
Admission is very competitive; the 158 members of the 2007 Fall entering class
represent 27 states, 71 undergraduate schools and 15 graduate programs. The law
school LSAT median is 161 and the median undergraduate GPA is 3.50. Fifty‑four
percent of the Fall 2007 entering class are women; 32 percent are students of
color; 15 percent have graduate degrees. Twenty percent of our graduates enter
judicial clerkships after graduation, one of the highest percentages of all public
law schools.
The Faculty
The College
of Law has 36 full‑time
faculty, complemented by a diverse adjunct faculty. With a ratio of 12 to 1,
The College has one of the most favorable student‑faculty ratios of any
American law school. Many members of the faculty are nationally recognized
legal scholars, and 20 members of the faculty hold named professorships.
An extraordinary number of major texts are authored and
edited by our faculty (e.g., Mauet on Trial Techniques; Dobbs on Torts
and the Law of Remedies), with more than twelve nationally used
casebooks and another half‑dozen hornbooks written by our full‑time
faculty members. Practicing attorneys readily recognize such classics as Dobbs
on Torts and McCormick's Evidence, both written and updated by Arizona faculty.
Costs
The tuition structure of The University of Arizona
Rogers College of Law affords students the opportunity to pursue a legal
education of outstanding quality without extraordinary debt burden. For the
J.D., LL.M. and S.J.D. programs, tuition and fees for the 2007‑2008 academic
year are $17,700 for Arizona
residents and $28,500 for non‑residents.
Clinical Programs & Internships
The Rogers College of Law has a number of clinical
programs ‑ both in‑house and placement programs. The four in‑house
clinics are the Immigration Law, Domestic Violence, Child Advocacy and Indigenous
Peoples Law Clinics. The placement clinics consist of the Criminal Defense
Clinic (students placed with public defender offices), Criminal Prosecution
Clinic (students placed with prosecution agencies) and the Judicial Clerking
Program (students clerk with federal and state court judges). Additionally, the
College has internships with United States Senate, Congressional and White
House Drug Policy offices, as well as state, Governor and legislative internships,
a Ninth Circuit pro bono appellate project, a pro bono Justice Project, and
internships with the Navajo, Tohono O'odham, White Mountain Apache and Pascua
Yaqui tribal governments.
Career & Professional Development
The professionally staffed Career Office provides
employers, students and alumni with resources and counseling for professional development.
In 2007‑2008, 170+ firms, agencies, judges and corporations visited the
College to interview our students. The Career Office staff assists employers
with their hiring needs, whether summer associate, permanent attorney, or short‑term
research projects. Facilities and assistance are provided for employers who
wish to interview on‑campus, off‑campus or via teleconferencing.
College alumni and other subscribers can be reached by employers through our
web‑based job publication, The Career AdvoCAT. The Class of 2007
found 95% employment six months after graduation, with the largest percentage
(87%) choosing legal work with traditional law firms, judicial clerkships and
government practice. Geographically, 64% of the Class of 2006 found employment
in Arizona,
while the remaining 36% found employment in 16 other states.
