The School of Law was established in 1924, and has a
rich and exciting history. The recently expanded law school building complex is
named after Dr. Robert A. Leflar, who was associated with the law school as
Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Dean, Distinguished
Professor and Dean Emeritus from 1927 until his death in 1997, and was
recognized as a leading national authority in the areas of Conflict of Laws and
Torts. Former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady, now Senator Hillary
Rodham Clinton, and the late Senators J. William Fulbright and Claude Pepper
were also members of our faculty at earlier stages in their careers.
Our alumni have made outstanding contributions at the
international, national, and state levels, and include George Haley (’52), who
served as U.S. Ambassador to Gambia,
Rodney Slater (’80), former U.S. Secretary of Transportation; former U.S.
Congressman W. Asa Hutchinson (’75) former director of the DEA and
undersecretary for Border and Transportation, Security of the Homeland Security
Department, U.S. Senator Mark Pryor (’88); and former U.S. Senator David Pryor
(’64). Several of our Alumni have served as Governor of Arkansas, including the
current Governor, Mike Beebe. A number of our Alumni have served with
distinction in both state and federal judicial position.
Our law
school played a key role in a historic first when, in 1948, Silas Hunt was
admitted to our law school as the first African American student in the modern
era to be admitted to a Southern public university without litigation. In 2006,
Cynthia Nance became our first female and our first African American Dean,
becoming at the time one of only three African American female law school deans
in the nation.
The law
school admits a class of approximately 135 to 150 students every year in the
fall. A full-time faculty of 36 assures a low student-teacher ratio and enables
faculty and students to form close and beneficial professional relationships.
In addition to the regular law program, we offer the only LL.M. degree in
Agricultural Law in the nation. This unique graduate law program has attracted
students from 35 different states and at least 15 foreign countries.
Twenty-four credits of specialty courses in the law of food and agriculture are
available to the LL.M students and to J.D. students in good standing.
Approximately 10 graduate students are admitted to this program each year.
Our
students assist in the publication of three academic journals, the Arkansas Law
Review, the Journal of Food Law & Policy, and the Journal of Islamic Law
and Culture. Our faculty publishes Arkansas Law Notes annually for our alumni and
the Arkansas
bar. The National
Agricultural Law
Center, located at our
law school, regularly publishes articles and other items on-line, and maintains
an extensive database relating to agricultural law at
www.nationalaglawcenter.org.
Our
program of legal education is a combination of traditional doctrinal courses
and practical skills instruction. Every student is required to complete three
legal writing courses and at least one practical skills course from a number of
courses designed for that purpose. Students may also choose from a variety of
live-client clinics. Our students participate in an extensive and very
successful advocacy skills program, coordinated by the student-run Board
Advocates. It includes multiple appellate moot court, trial advocacy, client
counseling and negotiation competitions.
The law
school is located in Fayetteville--a
beautiful college town of approximately 60,000 in the Ozarks. The University
has a total enrollment of about 18,000.
