UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO LAW SCHOOL KITTREDGE LOOP DRIVE, 401 UCB BOULDER, COLORADO 80309-0401 Telephone: (303) 492-8047 Fax: (303) 492-1757 URL:http://www.colorado.edu/law/ ABA
Approved Since 1923 The
University of Colorado was founded in 1876 at the present Boulder campus. The
Law School was established in 1892 and is a charter member of the Association
of American Law Schools. The school is national in its orientation, and
graduates are academically qualified to take the bar examination in any of the
50 states, and the school has enjoyed the highest bar passage rate in the
state. Colorado's
faculty is a diverse community of scholars who inspire the vigorous pursuit of
ideas, critical analysis, and civic engagement in order to advance the rule of
law in an open, sustainable society. The faculty has a demonstrated record of
excellence in teaching, research, and public service. Particular areas of
strength include natural resources and environmental, American Indian,
telecommunications, constitutional law, juvenile and family, energy, and
criminal law. A favorable
faculty‑student ratio produces classes of a size that encourages
discussion. Courses are offered in law and a wide range of law‑related
subjects. Students are free to take almost all second‑ and third‑year
courses as electives after a required first‑year curriculum. Emphasis in
areas of curricular strength at the Law School, such as commercial law, natural
resources and environmental law, or criminal law and procedure, is possible.
The Law School offers several dual degree programs: Juris Doctor‑Master
of Business Administration with the Leeds School of Business; Juris Doctor‑Master of Public Affairs
with the Graduate School of Public Affairs on the Denver campus; Juris Doctor‑Master
of Science in Telecommunications with the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications
Department; Juris Doctor‑Master of Science in Environmental Studies with
the Environmental Studies Graduate Program, and Juris Doctor‑Master of
Urban and Regional Planning with the College of Architecture and Planning. The Law
School developed one of the nation's first programs in clinical legal
education. Since the inception of the clinic in 1948, the Law School's
commitment to clinical education has grown in size and scope. Current clinic
offerings include the Appellate Advocacy, Civil Litigation, Criminal Defense,
Federal Civil Practice, Technology & Policy, Entrepreneurial Law, Juvenile
and Family Law, American Indian Law, Natural Resources Litigation, and Wrongful
Convictions Clinics. In addition to legal clinics, other special programs at
the Law School include the Natural Resources Law Center, Byron R. White Center
for the Study of American Constitutional Law, Energy and Environmental Security
Initiative and the Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program. The Natural
Resources Law Center is nationally recognized for its research and publications
on natural resources and environmental issues. The Center's programmatic goal
is to improve decision making that promotes the long‑term sustainability
of the West's environment and communities. The Byron R. White Center for the
Study of American Constitutional Law is named in honor of the late Supreme
Court Justice and CU alumnus, enhances the study and teaching of constitutional
law and to stimulate public debate and understanding of our constitutional
system. The Energy & Environmental Security Initiative is an
interdisciplinary research and policy center that facilitates progress toward a
global sustainable energy future through laws, policies, quality information,
and technology solutions. Finally, the Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications
Program was created to bring to campus individuals from legal, technical, and
business backgrounds to learn about and discuss issues facing the
telecommunications and information technology community. The Law
School maintains high standards of academic performance and admits only
students ranking among the nation's best applicants. The small size of the Law
School ‑ approximately 170 in each entering class ‑ and the large
number of applicants require an extremely selective admissions process. First‑year
students are admitted only in the fall semester and only as full‑time day
students. They may not work during their critical first year of study. The Law
School has no part‑time or evening division. In evaluating
applicants for admission, the Admissions Committee relies on the completed
application form, the report of LSAT scores, and undergraduate GPA and
transcripts received from LSDAS, as well as personal essays and recommendations
from persons who have had an opportunity to observe the applicant's ability and
performance. Typical classes have a median GPA of 3.6 and a median LSAT score
of 163 (90th percentile); however, these scores are considered in the context
of the entire application. Graduate level work is also considered. In the
faculty's judgment, a diverse student body improves the overall educational
experience. Nonresident
students may establish Colorado residency by maintaining their legal residence
in Colorado for twelve consecutive months. Scholarships are available from Law
School, state and private funds, and students may qualify for federal and
private loan programs. Financial aid is available to resident and nonresident
students. The Law
Library at the University of Colorado contains one of the best legal reference
collections in the western United States. It consists of over 500,000 volumes
and microform equivalents, including a comprehensive collection of case law
from all jurisdictions, statutes of all states, and the major digests, encyclopedias,
and texts dealing with American law. English, Canadian, and other Commonwealth
materials are almost as complete. Selective foreign and international law
holdings provide a basis for comparative law studies. The Law
School has an active Office of Career Development that provides personal and
group career counseling to assist and prepare student alumni with decisions
about career direction, legal employers, and alternatives to traditional legal
careers. The office has developed and executed a sophisticated marketing and
recruiting plan to entice legal employers to hire our students and graduates.
Over 90% of all graduates are employed within nine months after graduation.
