Approved Since 1925 What makes a
law school distinctive? At the University of Idaho it is a model of legal
education that combines a collegial learning experience in one of America's
smallest, selective law schools with an opportunity for professional
development in a metropolitan setting. From the friendly residential campus in
Moscow to the stimulating urban environment in Boise, the College of Law
provides all four ingredients of a comprehensive, leading‑edge
professional education: 1) Substantive legal expertise 2) Interdisciplinary and global perspectives 3) Practical lawyering skills 4) Sound ethical values Legal
education at Idaho is remarkably cost‑effective and technologically
enriched. National surveys have disclosed that the College of Law provides exceptional
value in relation to cost, and that the University of Idaho has one of
America's most "wired" campuses. Idaho also offers the advantage of
reciprocal admissions to the Bar in Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Wyoming‑
‑making it a gateway to professional opportunity throughout the
Northwest. Founded in
1909, the College of Law has established a reputation for excellence. It is one
of the oldest members of the AALS (1914) in addition to being ABA‑accredited
since 1925. The College
enrolls only about 100‑110 new students each year, assuring that each
student receives individual attention. The student body typically represents
more than 80 colleges and universities and more than 25 states, plus Canada.
The College promotes diversity and is
committed to increasing opportunities for women and underrepresented
populations. Faculty
members are known for their dedication to the profession of teaching and for
their informal accessibility outside the classroom. Members of the faculty have
chaired or anchored national educational and professional committees, served in
the judiciary, and assisted executive and legislative agencies in many law
reform projects. The
curriculum increasingly reflects the College's strategic emphases upon natural
resources and environmental law, business law and entrepreneurism, and advocacy
and dispute resolution. The natural resources area will be enriched, starting
in 2007‑08, by an innovative water law and policy program known as
"Water of the West". The College is home to the Northwest Institute
for Dispute Resolution. It also sponsors a major annual international law
conference as well as an American Indian law conference, and is a partner in
publishing the German Law Journal: Review of Developments in German, European and
International Jurisprudence. The College
offers third‑year students the opportunity to study law and lawyering
skills through the representation of clients in a wide variety of cases under
the supervision of clinical faculty.
Students also may gain transactional experience in a small business
legal clinic. In addition, students may participate in a "Semester in Practice"
program in Boise as well as a host of internships in Idaho and elsewhere. Effective in
2006‑07, all entering law students will participate in a universal pro
bono service program. The program enables every student to engage in an
activity that improves access to justice or the administration of justice,
under the guidance of a lawyer or judge. The College
of Law building contains a courtroom periodically used by the Idaho Supreme
Court and Court of Appeals, classrooms with new technology to be installed in
2006‑07, full service library, discussion areas, an interactive video
classroom, and seminar rooms. The entire building provides wireless
connectivity. TV videotaping equipment, networked computer terminals, and other
modern technological advances now having an impact on the practice of law are
available for student instruction and use. The library
of the College of Law contains more than 235,000 volumes (a favorable
collection‑to‑student ratio) and nearly 4,000 active serial
subscriptions. Its subscriptions to LEXIS, Westlaw, Hein‑on‑line, and
other electronic databases enable students to learn the most up‑to‑date
methods for legal research. Membership
in the Western Library Network (WLN) allows library staff to access holdings of
approximately 300 libraries in the Pacific Northwest. The University
of Idaho is a centerpiece of "The Palouse," a picturesque area of
rolling, wheat‑covered hills and forested mountains. Moscow, the
university's hometown, is a thriving retail and hospitality center as well as a
regional center for the arts and gateway to a wonderland of recreational
opportunities. Washington State
University, with an enrollment of 18,000, is located eight miles west. Between these two major universities,
students enjoy an exceptionally wide range of social, cultural, and educational
opportunities. Numerous ski areas are
within driving distance of the school, while the Idaho countryside, rivers, and
lakes beckon to everyone who yearns to lead a healthy outdoor life. Dean: Donald L. Burnett (208) 885‑4977 Associate Dean:
